Plan a sheet metal part for manufacture

From sheet profile to finished assembly

Sheet metal fabrication combines processes such as cutting, punching, bending and joining to create panels, brackets, covers and equipment enclosures. The sequence depends on the geometry, material and finished assembly. Hardware insertion, welding and finishing requirements should be identified with the initial drawing package.

Specify material grade and thickness, bend geometry, hole patterns, cutouts and features that must align after forming. Identify cosmetic faces and any areas where welding, coating or hardware could affect fit. For an assembly, include a bill of materials and the relationship between the components.

Finish, color, corrosion protection and masking requirements should be reviewed before quotation so they can be considered alongside the part geometry.

Information for a useful fabrication quote

  • Current part drawings or models and the drawing revision.
  • Material, sheet thickness, quantity and required finish.
  • Critical formed dimensions, mating features and tolerances.
  • Weld details, hardware, assembly and cosmetic requirements.
  • Inspection, protective packaging, destination and target timing.

Share flat-pattern data if available, along with the finished part drawing or model. Open design questions can be noted in the request for review.
